Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Lifeline program and free phones.
Is the phone really free?
Yes. The Lifeline program provides a monthly subsidy that many providers use to cover the complete cost of a basic plan. Many providers also offer a free entry-level smartphone to new customers.
Can I keep my current phone number?
In most cases, yes. When you sign up with a new Lifeline provider, you can request to "port" your existing number over. You will need your account number and PIN from your current carrier.
Can I have more than one free phone?
No. The Lifeline benefit is limited to one per household. A household is defined as a group of people who live together and share expenses.
What if I lose my phone?
If your phone is lost or stolen, contact your provider immediately. Replacement policies vary; some may charge a fee for a replacement device.
Does the data expire?
Most Lifeline plans reset their data limits on a monthly basis. Unused data typically does not roll over to the next month.
